Do you know the size of your carbon footprint?

I believe in trying to make a difference... both at home and around the world.

Toward that goal I donate a portion of GreenLeaf profits to environmental and charitable causes including the Rainforest Action Network , The Nature Conservancy and The American Himalayan Foundation.

Trekking through Nepal inspired me to seek ways to help the people and environment of this incredible part of the world through the American Himalyan Foundation - originally founded by Sir Edmund Hillary. As the AHF website explains: The Himalaya, roof of the world, is a magic place where the magnificence of the world’s highest mountains is mirrored in the rugged beauty and unique culture of the people who live in their shadow. In these remote regions people often live without basic health care and education. Economic pressures have forced environmental degradation and traditional ways of life are in danger of disappearing. The American Himalayan Foundation's work includes projects in health care, education, cultural preservation and environmental conservation.

I'm also drawn to the sea... Scientists estimate that one quarter of the world's coral reefs are already gone. Looking ahead, they predict that all coral reefs will be gone in just 30-50 years unless steps are taken to reverse the trend. As a scuba diver, I'm excited to support a project on the shores of Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea that educates local high school students in marine biology and other vital environmental issues. These kids are now leading local efforts to conserve their environmental treasure. It was a privilege for me to dive the pristine reefs of Kimbe Bay and see first hand the work of the Mahonia na Dari Research Center. (Nature Conservancy PNG Program)

Donating time is also an important (and sometimes more challenging) way of giving back. I discovered Habitat for Humanity's terrific Women Build program.Women learn construction skills in an unintimidating environment while working shoulder-to-shoulder with families in need. I enjoyed getting the knack of swinging a hammer with gusto and running a tablesaw (look out!) and plan to help out again with future Women Build houses.

Finally, I strive to be a green business and buy carbon-offsets to neutralize my air travel emissions. Calculate your carbon footprint

You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. ~ Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
